What If I Don’t Have the ‘Village’ Everyone Talks About?

by | Aug 1, 2026 | Uncategorized

You’ve probably heard the phrase before: “It takes a village.”

People often say it when talking about pregnancy, parenting, or raising children. The idea is simple. Having people around you who can offer support, encouragement, and help when you need it.

But what if you don’t feel like you have that?

For some women, pregnancy comes with a built-in support system. They have family nearby, close friends they can call, and people who are ready to help when needed.

For others, the experience can feel very different.

Maybe your family lives far away. Maybe your relationships are complicated. Maybe you’ve moved to a new area, gone through a difficult season, or simply don’t have the kind of support network that people assume everyone has.

If that’s your situation, you may find yourself wondering:

Who am I supposed to lean on?

If you’ve ever found yourself asking that question, you’re not alone.

The “Village” Doesn’t Always Look the Way We Expect

When people talk about having a village, they often picture a large group of family and friends who are constantly available.

In reality, support doesn’t always come in that form.

Sometimes a village is one trusted friend.

Sometimes it’s a mentor, a church community, a support group, or a local organization.

Sometimes it’s a few people who consistently show up, even if they were not part of your life from the beginning.

A strong support system is not measured by the number of people in it. It is measured by the quality of the people you can count on.

It’s Okay to Ask For Support

For many women, asking for help feels uncomfortable.

You may worry about being a burden. You may feel like you should be able to handle everything on your own.

But needing support is not a sign of weakness. It is part of being human.

In fact, one of the healthiest things you can do during a challenging season is recognize that you do not have to carry everything by yourself.

From there, I would continue with something like:

Building Your Village One Step at a Time

If you don’t have a strong support system right now, that doesn’t mean one can never exist.

Many people build their support systems over time.

Sometimes it starts by reaching out to one trusted person. Other times, it means connecting with a local community, church, parenting group, or organization that offers support and resources.

The important thing to remember is that support does not have to come from the people you expected.

Some of the most meaningful relationships are built during difficult seasons, when people step in to offer encouragement, guidance, and practical help.

Support Can Be Practical, Too

When people think about support, they often think about emotional encouragement. While that is important, support can also be practical.

Sometimes support looks like having someone answer your questions. Sometimes it means learning new parenting skills, finding community resources, or connecting with people who understand what you’re experiencing.

Support is not always about having someone solve your problems. Often, it’s about having someone walk alongside you while you navigate them.

You Don’t Have to Figure it Out Alone

At Hope Rising, we know that everyone’s support system looks different.

Whether you have a large group of people around you or feel like you’re navigating this season on your own, you deserve access to support, information, and resources that help you move forward with confidence.

From pregnancy services and parenting classes to practical resources and ongoing encouragement, our goal is to meet people where they are and provide support along the way.

Having a village doesn’t always mean having a crowd.

Sometimes it starts with finding one place, one person, or one resource that reminds you that you’re not carrying everything by yourself.
