Common Pregnancy Symptoms
You could be experiencing a missed period or other common symptoms, including:
- Tender, swollen breasts
- Fatigue
- Nausea with or without vomiting
- Frequent urination
How Pregnancy Tests Work
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in urine. Your body only produces this hormone if you are pregnant– after the egg is fertilized and implanted in the lining of the uterus.
To begin pregnancy confirmation, take an at-home pregnancy test after purchasing one at your local convenience store. According to most manufacturers, at-home pregnancy tests are 99 percent effective. They are simple to use and very inexpensive.
Timing is Key
You may already be experiencing symptoms of early pregnancy. One of the best times to take a pregnancy test is after the first day of your missed period.
You could get false results if you take a pregnancy test too early, as it takes time for your body to create a detectable level of the hCG hormone (at least 7-12 days).
Follow Up With An Ultrasound
We’ll also administer a pregnancy test at our center and if there’s a positive result, the next step is an ultrasound.
Ultrasound is used to verify the pregnancy, discover if the pregnancy is viable, and determine how far along the pregnancy is. All of this information is critical to your decision-making process going forward.
